Our country supports keeping up with the Jones'. Heck, the countries leadership has us in debt up to our eyeballs to ensure we are king of the mountain. It's not expected of anyone to live within their means.
But Jesus does.
Let no debt remain outstanding... Romans 13:8
Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. Ecclesiastes 5:10
But godliness with contentment is great gain. 1 Timothy 6:6
And here is where Chad and I find ourselves as of late. Our running joke when something goes wrong in the house (called home ownership) we pop off and say "we should just move". Our Saturday morning coffee chats have been spent looking at houses online. It all started out innocently enough but it started breeding something.
Discontentment.
And not just in our house. It started creeping into Chad's older but paid for truck, job stuff, our physical attitudes.
Until God clearly highlighted the hold it had on us. Now, a few weeks in, it's like we've been given discontentment glasses and area after area we have a visual opportunity to rejoice in what we have been given.
Our culture does not promote rejoicing in contentment. It teaches at an early age we are entitled to more mentally, emotionally, and materially. {insert personal rant on my views on not keeping score with kids games, everyone gets a trophy, birthday parties that give gifts (party favors) as to not let a kid feel left out...}
The goal is to be different. To swim upstream. To be content with giving it your all and sometimes losing. To keep joy in the little day to day hiccups. And fully rejoice in the blessings we are handed.
